Get to know Morgan

The people at Handicraft Cafe always look forward to a new issue of Knitty coming out- it’s one of our very favorite knitting magazines.  Amy Singer, Knitty’s head honcho, really does an amazing job of creating an online magazine that combines news, patterns and knitting tips and tricks in a truly beautiful package.  Every single issue gives us a new yarn to lust after, a new pattern that makes us cast on immediately, and articles that make us think about knitting and other fiberarts in a whole new way.

But the Fall 2008 issue of Knitty marked an especially important moment for us because it featured Morgan, the first design to appear in Knitty by our own resident superstar, Anne Kuo Lukito.  Anne’s crafty skills have been featured in several places, including the book Sweater Surgery by Stephanie Girard and the television show Uncommon Threads, but there is something special about appearing in Knitty, like it’s a sign that you’ve really made it.

Morgan is a top down English driving cap that is amazingly constructed in one piece!  The unique construction really shows off Anne’s ability to make really ingenious design.

I love this pattern because it is truly unisex- I’ve already had 3 guys I know ask me to knit one up for them.  There are definitely not enough man-friendly patterns out there.  Look how handsome my friend Derek looks modeling:

The reccomended yarn for Morgan is Savannah DK by The Fibre Company.  Savannah DK is perfect for this project- it gives a nice tweedy effect.  Savannah DK can be a little hard to find, but you can always buy it from us at HandicraftCafe.com!  In case you want other yarn options though, Anne reccomends trying Zitron Ecco.  Ecco comes in a wide array of both solid and variegated shades.  As an added bonus, Ecco is a superwash yarn, so you can throw it in the washing machine for easy care.

If you have any questions about Morgan, Anne has more information, including a tutorial and FAQ, on her blog, Crafty Diversions.  You can also check out some of her other fabulous patterns and projects while you’re there.

We hope you like Morgan!
